A creature with defender does not start a battle.
Creatures with Defender never attack although they do become offensive and can use Activate and Mobility. They can engage in battle and inflict damage to other creatures but they cannot attack players.
Certain cards like Flamerift Instigator can remove Defender from a creature and allow them to attack.
Energy Prison can add Defender to a creature, stopping it from attacking players.
